D. Hal Griffitt, 74, died October 29, 2010, after a long battle with PLS, a form of Lou Gehrig-s Disease. A native of Nicholasville, KY, he grew up on Henry Knight-s Almahurst Farm managed for twenty years by his father. The son of the late Palmer and Alice Griffitt graduated from Jessamine County High School , attended the University of Kentucky and was a member of the U.S. Air Force. He returned to Kentucky after his military service and worked to become a Thoroughbred trainer; saddling his first winner at Hazel Park, Detroit MI in 1964. Many more winners and stakes winners followed as he continued to train from New Orleans, to Kentucky and the Jersey Shore until his disease forced his retirement. In addition to his wife and best friend, Joan, he is survived by sons Mark (Cynthia) Griffitt, Barnwell, SC; and George Griffitt, Kline, SC; a grandson, Cooper Griffitt; a sister, Betty Hudson, Louisville, KY as well as a deceased sister, Pat Griffith and two deceased brothers, Joseph and Robert; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions are suggested to Residents Trust Fund, Thomson Hood Veterans Center, 100 Veterans Drive, Wilmore, KY 40390.
