Evalina K. Settle, 84, of Wilmore, passed into peace with her Lord on Feb. 22, 2025. She was the widow of John C. Settle, Jr., her husband for more than 65 years.
Evalina was born in Louisville, KY to Elizabeth (Cromwell) and Harold P. Kremer. She grew up in the Shawnee area with her older sister.
She married and moved to Norfolk, VA, where she and John, and later, baby Elizabeth, resided until John’s Navy service ended and they moved to New Albany, IN, where daughter, Anna and son, John arrived to complete her family.
During this time, Evalina developed a handwriting script based on Shaker journals and became the calligrapher for the newly restored Shaker Village in Harrodsburg.
They moved to Wilmore in 1972, where she joined Wilmore Presbyterian Church and would spend the rest of her life with this community of extended family, neighbors, and friends that she adored.
Through the years, Evalina would be active in school PTOs, church missions, and church leadership (as Deacon and Elder). She had her own business, Settle Script, and would work as a freelance artist; hand lettering invitations and signs and creating “Houselettes.” She would clerk at Farmer’s Bank, work for Blooded Horse Sales, Co., and eventually at Shakertown. She illustrated and helped to compile two Shaker cookbooks and created her own cookbook. Later, she wrote a biography of her mother’s life, intermingling recipes with history and collected memories.
Evalina was creative in every aspect of her life. She would straighten it, design it, fix it, decorate it (and oh, how she loved to wallpaper it!), whatever the need happened to be, she did it. She had a vibrant spirit, unquenchable curiosity, and abundant joy. She was a wonderful cook, a gracious hostess, and a loyal friend. She loved to laugh and she shared that laughter easily.
Her family was her joy. She shared a lifetime of love with “Junnie” and cherished her children. She took her title of “MoMo” seriously and went to extreme lengths to care for her grandchildren and those she deemed “acquired” grands.
Evalina had special friends, Betsy, Pat, and Wanda, who shared her childhood and remained close throughout their lives. She had a special cousin, Betty, and the next generation of cousins and a nephew, along with the Settle side of her family, that were close to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Anna “Pem” Kremer, her husband, and twin great-granddaughters Emily and Olivia Collins.
She is survived by daughters Elizabeth Collins and Anna Schick, along with her husband Byron Schick (Evalina’s “bonus son”), and son, John H. Settle (Jenny France Spencer).
Also left to carry her legacy of love are grandchildren: James Collins, Sterling Schick, Elizabeth (Greg) Ramey, Bailie Gardner, Robert Collins, Zach (Hana) Settle, Catey Settle and Sydney (Aaron) Whitaker, along with great-grandchildren: Addison, Luke, Riley, Evan and Jasper.
The family will greet friends and share Evalina’s art at Wilmore Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Mar. 23 from 4:00-6:00pm and from 9:30-10:30am, prior to the service.
A celebration of life will begin at 10:30am on Mar. 24 at Wilmore Presbyterian Church. The interment of her ashes will be at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. The procession will leave Wilmore at 2:00pm with committal at 2:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Wilmore Presbyterian Church, its Urban Village mission, or its community Clean Cupboard mission.
