George Edward Mcgrann

October 7, 1937 — March 9, 2010

Nicholasville-George Edward McGrann, 72, of Portland Way, passed away Tuesday at his home surrounded by his family. Born October 7, 1937, he was the eldest son of the late George H. and Inez Davis McGrann. He attended Nicholasville High School where he excelled in athletics. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1957. After his honorable discharge he moved to Lexington, KY to pursue his career in law enforcement. He was a policeman with the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government for 23 years prior to his retirement where he was assigned to several divisions including: Narcotics Unit, Traffic and Motorcycle Division, Forgery-Bad Checks, White Collar Crime Unit and Property Evidence Unit. He was commended for valor and courage for placing his life in jeopardy for others while a policeman. He attended Eastern Kentucky University and earned his A.A. and B.S. in Law Enforcement and also acquired Masters Degree hours. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Retired Policeman, Fireman and Widows, Inc. of Lexington and was a member of the Oleika Temple. Survivors include a son, Michael Lee McGrann-Stanford, a daughter, Cathy Ann Bruner-Nicholasville, two grandchildren, Justin and Katie Bruner, four sisters, Patricia Leighty, Barbara Kincaid, Mary (Richie) Vaughn and Bonnie Stetler, a brother, Joseph (Debbie) McGrann, several nieces, nephews and other family members. He was preceded in death by two children, George William McGrann and Timothy Allen McGrann, a brother, Cecil McGrann and a sister, Helen Reed. Services will be 1:30 Friday at Betts & West Funeral Home with Pastor James Humphrey. Burial will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9pm Thursday.
