Nicholasville-Grandon Parker Benton, 81, widower of Laura Barnes Benton, who passed away in 1996, left his earthly home on May 10th at the VA Hospital on Leestown Road, Lexington, KY. He was a member of the Southland Christian Church where he served as a deacon for several years. Grandon was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Korean War and reactivated in 1960 to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas for 10 months of training.

After serving in Korea, he was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves for 31 years attaining the rank of Command Sergeant Major before retiring in 1979. He was an active member of the VFW and DAV, receiving numerous local, state and national commendations as well as being named a Kentucky Colonel. Grandon was a master carpenter, building and remodeling hundreds of homes before retiring in 1981.

He was born in Richmond, KY on June 10, 1932 to the late Grandon and Esther (Crutchfield) Benton. He leaves his memories to his two children, Terrye Perkins-Lancaster and Parker Benton, special friend Trevor Martin-Chicago, IL, his 'one and only' granddaughter, Laura Ashley Perkins, two brothers, William Harold Benton and Don Louis (Jo),Benton, two sisters, Paula Bertram and Susan (Charles) Moore, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Billy Wayne Perkins and two best friends, Don Preston and Jerry Lovitt.

Special thanks to the VA Hospital Staff at Leestown Road for the excellent care and respect he received there in his last days. The family will greet friends from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Monday, May 12th at Betts & West Funeral Home with funeral service 11:00am Tuesday May 13th. He will be laid to rest with his wife Laura in Camp Nelson Cemetery with full military honors. Bearers will be Doodle Peel, Jeff, Todd and Scott Barnes, Larry Lindsey and Stanley Durham.
