Gunther Erich Pohl

July 22, 1925 — February 20, 2009

Wilmore-Gunther Erich Pohl, 83, husband of 59 years to Dorothy Beck Pohl, of Lowry Lane, died February 20, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Berlin, Germany, son of the late Erich Ernst and Martha Seidel Pohl. He was a member of Journey Christian Fellowship, a graduate of New York University (BA, MA) and Columbia University (MLS), and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Mr. Pohl was a chief librarian with the N.Y. Public Library, serving in the Local History and Genealogy Division for 38 years, was compiler of the N.Y. State Biography and Portrait Index, and a fellow and former trustee of the N.Y. Genealogical and Biographical Society. He was listed in Who-s Who in America, and was a member of the American Library Association and recipient of the History Section Award in 1996. Additional survivors include four children, Christine Pohl, Louise (Steven) Harding, Elizabeth Nelles (her late husband Scott), Ronald E.G. (Dorothy) Pohl, nine grandchildren, Luke (Susan) Harding, Paul (Kana) Harding, Hadley and Drew Nelles, Jeremy, Madison, Jessamyn, Chelsea and Dylan Pohl, two great grandchildren, Grant and Scarlett Harding. Services will be 11:00am Monday at Betts & West Funeral Home with The Reverend F. Martin Gornik. Burial will follow in the Wilmore Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-9pm Sunday.
