John Knox Nickell, 76, husband of Mary Nickell and the late Ruth Canter Nickell, of Sulphur Well Road, died Monday, August 11, 2014 at his home surrounded by his beloved family and friends. He was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky on November 27, 1937, the son of the late Reed and Hazel Reid Nickell. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and farming. In addition, he served as a Magistrate for 21 years on the Jessamine Co. 5th District Fiscal Court. John was a member of the Mt. Beulah United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #61, Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, Jessamine County Beef Cattle Association, Jessamine Co. Methodist Men, Jessamine Co. Health Board, an Executive Board member of the Jessamine Co. Democratic Party and was also instrumental in the forming of the Camp Nelson War Heritage Park. Additional survivors are his three daughters, Donna (Bobby) Miller, Jessamine Co; June (Jerry) Richey, Lexington; and Edie (Ken) Miller, Mt. Sterling, five grandchildren Stephen (Aimee) Miller, Amy (Jerry Blanton) Brooks, John Thomas (Kristi) Miller, Ben (Alex Viertel) Brooks and Alexandra Miller, six great-grandchildren, Madi Giles, Livi Blanton, Claire Miller, Emily Blanton, Emory Kate Miller and Connor Blanton, a nephew, Jeffrey Nickell, great nephew , Scotty (Christy) Nickell, two great nieces, Melody Perkins and Katie (Zach) Lucas, two great-great nieces, Emilie Stinnett and Aubree Nickell, nephew- in-law, Bobby Perkins, three step children, Kathy (James) Yaste, Randy (Betty) Sims and Teresa (Terry) McIlvoy and eight step grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren and numerous other family members and friends and his special cow 'Lucky'. He was preceded in death by his brother Carl Nickell a sister, Betty Nickell and niece, Carla Perkins. Services will be 11:00 AM Friday at Betts & West Funeral Home with Rev. Marvin Lagle and Pastor David Bardin officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday and 4:00 until 9:00 PM Thursday at Betts & West Funeral Home. A Masonic Service will be 7:00 PM Thursday. Pallbearers will be Stephen Miller, John Thomas Miller, Ben Brooks, Jeffrey Nickell, Larry Lewis and Jake Drug. Honorary Pallbearers will be Neal Cassity, Clay Corman, Howard Downing, Donnie Goodlett, Earl Ingram, Charles Preston, Ronald Dale Shearer, Ron Shearer, Dwayne Stinnett and Brad Teater.
