Lonnie Cloy Carpenter, 94, left this world on Friday, June 5, 2015 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Joyce Carpenter and her family, his son Dean, daughter Sherry, and his grandchildren Doug, Morgan, and Robin.
Lonnie was a kind, caring man who lived his dedication to mankind throughout his many years. Born in Amarillo, Texas to Lela and Cloy Carpenter, he learned strong values and a devotion to others through the experiences he had growing up in the hot, dry summers and cold Texas winters, of which he loved to tell stories.
After graduating from Southern Methodist University, Lonnie joined the ministry and later built a career in social work. As a true proponent of diversity of belief, social responsibility, and human spirituality, he helped found Thomas Jefferson Universal Unitarian Church in Louisville, KY. And in retirement he remained dedicated to a better world, helping to change people's lives as a teacher, and providing advocacy for children as a Court Appointed Special Advocate and a member of the Foster Care Review Board. He was a long-time volunteer for Hospice and gave comfort to many.
A lover of culture and history, Lonnie became a world traveler, exploring many countries with his wife Joyce. Though words cannot sum up his existence, Lonnie Cloy 'Poppy' Carpenter was one of the rare people that left the world a better place.
As Lonnie wished, no service will be held, but in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of the Bluegrass in Lonnie Carpenter's name.
