Mel Machesney died on February 26, 2012. He was born on December 29, 1920 to Ralph and Estelle (Yost) Machesney in Fairview, West Virginia. He was a veteran having served in World War II in the European Theatre. Upon discharge from the Military, he attended West Virginia University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Mel spent most of his working years employed as Head of Chemistry for Mountaineer Carbon Company in Moundsville, West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Katherine Baker Machesney. Mel had two brothers who also preceded him in death, Ross Machesney (Katherine) and Hugh (Chinzy) Machesney (Phoebe).
He is survived by family and extended family who loved him dearly. Survivors include two daughters Karen Machesney Sander, Mary Kathleen Machesney and son-in-law, Jerry Sander. Kathleen shared her home with her father following Katherine-s death. She provided him with companionship, comfort, and care for which he was very grateful.
Mel was very much a part of his grandchildren-s lives, Aaron Machesney Sander (Leah) and Lauren Sander Clark (Brian). He had three great grandchildren Ethan Gabriel Sander (mother Heather Sharp), Spencer Jacob Clark and Chase Ezra Clark. Other survivors who were very special to him are Sarah Kay Jackson (Harold) his niece, Helen Kolvek, his cousin, and John Baker (Rosella) his nephew.
Mel was a man of great depth of character and integrity. He was a very gentle and kind man, especially with family, but also with all with whom he had contact.
