Nora Lee Preston Waits, wife of Luther -Pete- Waits for over 65 years, went to her heavenly home, Wednesday, October 10, 2007 after a long illness. She was born in Garrard County on May 11, 1920 to the late George Hobert and Emma Doolin Preston. Nora graduated from Nicholasville High School in 1938 and attended Fugazzi Business School. For twenty years she was legal secretary to Howard Downing until her retirement in 1986. She was one of the founders of Calvary Baptist Church on Shun Road in Nicholasville. She served as the first church clerk and church treasurer. Calvary Baptist Church became Lighthouse Baptist Church when the two churches merged in 1996. Additional survivors include a daughter, Ann Carol (Paul) Faulkner-Nicholasville, two sisters, Hattie Reeves-Lexington and Mary E. Rice-Danville and one brother, Sam Preston-Nicholasville. She was preceded in death by two infant siblings, two brothers, Lloyd Preston and Jim Preston and a precious daughter, Nancy Kay Waits Shaffer. Services will be 2:00 Friday at Betts & West Funeral Home with Rev. Dan Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery. Bearers will be Jake Bentley, Bro. John Ritchie, Myron Howe, Pastor Ed Schwarz, Virgil Burton and Charles Stinnett. Honorary Bearers will be Bob Hughes, Howard Downing, J.D. Wells and Rev. Phil Peterson. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 PM at the funeral home. Donations may be sent to the Hospice of the Bluegrass. The family wishes to thank the following ladies for their good care to Nora during her illness: Iris Lafferty, Kate Stinnett, Marguetta Stubblefield, Shina Mendez and Sherry Goldey.
