Susan Davenport Ware

June 27, 1937 — February 18, 2017

Susan Davenport Ware passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at age 79. She was born in West Lafayette, Ind., on June 27, 1937. She is survived by her husband, Ray Miller Ware; her sister, Martha Mayland (Dickie); and her brother, Peter Malcomb Davenport. She is predeceased by her son, Steven Douglas Ware, and by her parents, Sara Elkins and Oscar Malcomb Davenport. She moved to Kentucky at age 11 and later attended Henry Clay High School, where she graduated co-valedictorian in 1955. She attended the University of Kentucky, majoring in accounting with a minor in mathematics. She was the recipient of the Alma Magna Mater Award for outstanding graduating senior. She was a member and officer of Cwens, Links, and Mortarboard and national leadership honoraries. She was a member of various college organizations, including SUKY as president, and Tau Sigma modern dance group. She was also a member and officer of Beta Alpha Psi, a national accounting honorary, and Beta Gamma Sigma, and national commerce honorary. She became a Certified Public Accountant in 1975 and a shareholder an officer of the accounting firm of Ware and Ware, P.S.C. She became a member of the Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants and served one term on its Board of Directors. She served as secretary, treasurer, and president of the Bluegrass Chapter of the Kentucky Society of CPAs. She served as member and chairman of the Public Relations Committee, the Membership Committee, the Long-range Planning Committee, and was the recipient of the Outstanding Chairman award for her work on the Public Relations Committee of the Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants. She was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and served on its Public Relations Coordinating Sub-Committee; the Advisory Board of the Practicing CPA; and the Tax Form Sub-committee. Her public service included the Executive Committee of the Fayette County March of Dimes, and she was the recipient of a Service Award from the national foundation of the March of Dimes. She was a member and officer of Women's Club of Central Kentucky. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Sue believed totally in the two-party political system and was completely involved over many years. She held almost every position, from precinct chairman to member of the Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Kentucky, including member, treasurer, and president of the Bluegrass Republican Women's Club; sixth district governor of the Kentucky Federation of Republican Women; state president of the Kentucky Federation of Republican Women; member of the Board of Directors of the National Federation of Republican Women; member of the executive committee of the Fayette County Republican Party; and member of the state executive committee of the Republican Party of Kentucky. Besides her professional and political life, Sue loved to cook, particularly to bake, and to make interesting presentations using vegetables and fruit carvings. She loved quilting and creating her own designs. She love gardening, particularly flowers, and she enjoyed reading historical novels. Sue was always willing to help anyone with the project, and was a wonderfully supportive wife and mother. There would have been no dissertation for her husband without Sue's help. She was also dearly loved by her caretaker, Judy Whiting.
