Nicholasville-Thelma Lundergan McHugh, 92 passed away peacefully on June 21, 2012 at her residence in Nicholasville, Kentucky surrounded by her family. She was born May 12, 1920 in Maysville, Kentucky to Jess and Catherine McCarthy Harney.
Her husband Eugene Lundergan of Maysville preceded her in death. Together they had five wonderful children. In 1976 she married Charles McHugh who also preceded her in death.
Thelma was a devoted employee of the Mason County Sheriff-s Department for 20 years. After retirement, she moved to Nicholasville to be near her family. In Nicholasville she volunteered for Jessamine County Hospice, and Waveland Museum and was an active member of St. Luke-s Catholic Church until her death. Thelma reveled in spending time with her family and most enjoyed her annual Christmas gathering with her loved ones. Thelma delighted in creating needlework that she gifted to her family and in her free time she was an avid reader and visitor to the public library. Most recently Mrs. McHugh became widely known and recognized throughout the state of Kentucky for her endearing appearance in the 'grannies' advertisement for her granddaughter Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.

Bonnie Weber (Robert) of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, Jerry Lundergan (Charlotte) of Lexington, Mike Lundergan (Cindy), of Lexington, Tom Lundergan (Lynne) of Versailles, KY and Peggy Patterson (Bill) Nicholasville, KY.
She is loved by her 15 grandchildren: Karen Mahaffey (Mark), Cheryl Newton (Chuck), Ben Weber, Alissa Tibe (Brian), Abigail Dobson (Chad), Alison Grimes (Andrew), Ashley Lundergan, Amy Coates (Taylor), Lindsay Lundergan, Jonathan Schumacher, Carter Schumacher, Tiffany Salsman (Nick), Elliott Lundergan (Kateleen), Cody Lundergan, Max Lundergan, Katie Fleming, Kristopher Riffe.
8 great grandchildren also survive her: Zackary Newton, Rebecca Mahaffey, Harrison and Grace Tibe, Miles and, Briggs Dobson, Olivia Salsman, and Ryleigh Kate Fleming.
She is survived by her sister Verna Fenoff of Newport, KY and two brothers J.R. Harney of Newport, KY, and William Harney of Dayton, Ky.
Also survived by stepson Randy McHugh and sons Ryan and Jason.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Children-s Department of The Jessamine County Public Library, St. Patrick-s School in Maysville, KY or to Hospice of the Bluegrass.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Betts and West Funeral Home, Nicholasville, KY and Brell and Son, Maysville, KY.
Visitation for Mrs. McHugh will be held on Sunday June 24, 2012 beginning at 4pm, Betts and West Funeral Home, Nicholasville, KY. Requiem High mass will be intoned Monday, June 25, 2012 at 10am, St. Luke-s Catholic Church, Nicholasville, KY by Reverend Patrick Fitzsimmons and Reverend Jim Sichko. Visitation will then be held at Brell & Son Funeral Home Maysville, KY Monday June 25, 2012, 5pm.
