William Edward 'Speck' Lowry, 91, passed to our Heavenly Father on May 11, 2013. He was a farmer and native of Jessamine County. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Martha June Poor Lowry and daughters, Grace Anita Chatham Woods, Billie Lee Goodwill and Georgia Ruth Moore, granddaughters Margaret Gracen Chatham and Elizabeth Abigail 'Betsy' Chatham, and grandson Jason Keith Goodwill (Heather). He was preceded in death by his parents Eliza McCauley and George Edward Lowry, his sister Robin Anita Lowry, and sons-in-law Terry Goodwill, William Moore and Donald Woods.
He spent his last nine months as a patient of Thomson-Hood Veteran Center near Wilmore. He and a group of fellow Legionnaires had been instrumental in encouraging legislators to build the first Veterans Center in Kentucky here. He was a volunteer escort for 14 years after its opening in 1991.
He was a member of Wilmore Free Methodist Church, past commander of American Legion Post 63, a member of the Jessamine County Historical Society, and a 1939 graduate of Wilmore High School. He served his country 39 months in World War II with the 821st Aviation Engineers in the Pacific Theatre.
The funeral is 1:00 pm Wednesday, May 15th at Wilmore Free Methodist Church. Visitation is 4:00 until 8:00 pm Tuesday, May 14 at Betts & West Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Jason Goodwill, Charles Hahn, Billy Wayne Poor, Elliott 'Dinky' Conn, Billy Morris, Lyman Cox, Jason Ellwood, and David Rhorer. Honorary pallbearers are Cecil Zweifel, Leonard Fitch, members of the Fitch's IGA Breakfast Club, Charles Denger, Dr. James McCarroll, Eugene Lynch, and members of American Legion Post 63.
