CEMETERY ETIQUETTE

Cemetery Etiquette

When visiting a cemetery, it's important to follow certain basic rules to show respect for both the living and the deceased. These guidelines help ensure a courteous and peaceful experience for everyone.

Follow the Rules

Check for a sign at the entrance listing specific rules for the cemetery and follow any floral regulations they have set.

Obey the Hours

Cemeteries are typically open from dawn until dusk. Avoid staying after dark to prevent trespassing charges.

Drive with Care

Stick to the roadways and stay off the grass. Drive slowly and watch for pedestrians. If the lane is narrow and another car approaches, move your car to allow them to pass.

Respect the Graves

Avoid touching monuments or headstones to prevent damage, especially to older memorials. Never remove items like flowers, coins, or tributes left by others.

Look After Your Children

Keep a close eye on children, ensuring they don’t run, yell, or climb on graves and monuments. Teach them to be respectful and considerate.

Speak Softly & Politely

Be considerate of other mourners by keeping your voice down and avoiding the use of bad language.

Lower the Volume

Turn off your cellphone and avoid phone conversations, as voices carry in open spaces. Also, turn off your car stereo while driving or parking in the cemetery.

Be Respectful of Services and Other Mourners

Do not interfere with funeral processions. Never take photos of strangers at a funeral or visiting a gravesite; respect their privacy and grief.

Don't Leave Trash Behind

Use designated trash receptacles or take your trash with you when you leave to avoid creating extra work for caretakers and disrespecting other visitors.

Leash Your Pets

Before bringing your pet, check if it’s allowed. If so, keep them on a leash at all times.
